SONGS OF SUMMER

“In summer, the song sings itself. ”
~William Carlos Williams

Wednesday August 5, 2009
Keeping with my ancient ancestral traditions, I like to keep track of the traditional Celtic feasts that honor Mother Earth and her seasonal cycles. This month’s festival is Lammas, the cross-quarter fire celebration marking the fullest height of summer. Though traditionally celebrated around August 1, Lammas technically occurs this year on August 7, the halfway juncture between Summer Solstice and Autumnal Equinox. This is a time in the northern hemisphere to step back and enjoy the first fruits of summer's harvest!

A supercharged Full Moon/Appulse Lunar Eclipse occurs on August 5, 2009, inside this Lammas window of power (please see the eclipse charts posted below). This eclipsed Full Moon in Sidereal Capricorn opposite the Sun in Sidereal Cancer continues the dynamic of the recent eclipse cycle, playing out some tension that we may feel related to security versus responsibility. The question remains…how do we create a secure inner base and find peace in the midst of our ever-changing outer world? How can we stop and enjoy the fruits of the harvest when the outer world seems so chaotic and uncertain?

The Full Moon falling in the Hindu lunar sign (nakshatra) of Shravana may hold a key to this dilemma. The basic orientation of Shravana is toward inner silence. If possible, try to find time to tune in and observe the inner silence in the hours preceding or following the Full Moon (8:55 PM EDT on August 5). According to the great spiritual master Paramahansa Yogananda, “Peace emanates from the soul, and is the sacred inner environment in which true happiness unfolds.” Yogananda also advised us to avoid angry, fearful and restless thoughts...to turn off the static of our "mind radio." By doing so, and instead finding the time to regularly receive the Great Silence within, we can tap into a deep reservoir of the “peace” which St. Paul said “passes all understanding.”

May your heart be always overflowing with the fruits of your good works, and may your song always sing itself!
