I’m currently at home in New England, in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, where spring is particularly luscious this year!

May 24, 2009 marks the exalted New Moon in Taurus, a magical time to get in touch with your mystical nature and cultivate your inner garden!

The New Moon marks the beginning of the lunar month that occurs every 29.5 days. New Moon always occurs when the Sun and the Moon reach the same celestial longitude, known as a conjunction in astrology. The current New Moon falls in Sidereal Taurus, the sign of the Moon’s exaltation, where it typically gives grounded sensibility and an abundant zest for life.

Even though this particular Moon is weakened somewhat by being in the 12^th house and conjunct the Sun (among other technical astrological factors), it is on the whole favorable and strong, especially for spirituality. It gives us the potential for compassion and humanitarian action. This will be a good month to focus on finances and material security. Taurus Moon is also passionate and creative and lends a sense of sweetness to the mundane.

The New Moon chart for Washington, DC has Gemini Rising conjunct the fixed star Mirzam (Beta-Canis Majoris), which is a second-magnitude star located in the paw of one of Orion’s hunting dogs. Mirzam is known as the "Announcer” and thus may indicate important news and even a public proclamation of some significance to the world. This will likely have to do with a foreign or business matter (and could even relate to foreign enemies), as Gemini rules the seventh house of the US (Kelleher) chart, which relates to such matters.

For all of us, communication will be an especially important focus this month, but we may be tested in this area, as well. With the New Moon, Sun and Mercury in the twelfth house, some may benefit from a quiet retreat in order to seek insight to enhance personal relationships and communication.

The rising nakshatra is Ardra, which indicates a stormy month ahead, both literally and figuratively. This is doubly so as the ruler of Ardra, Rahu (the Moon’s North Node), is located in the eighth house of change, upheaval and transformation. Ardra is within the constellation of Orion, which holds a dimensional portal through which souls descend into the Earth plane. Thus, the turbulent lessons of Ardra are always purposeful for the evolution of humanity, no matter how harsh they can be.

Retrograde Pluto remains very close to the galactic center at ~9 degrees of Sagittarius, and forms the focal point of a Yod (also called the finger of fate or finger of God). A Yod is formed by two planets that are sextile (in this case the Sun/Moon/Mercury conjunction is sextile the Moon’s South Node Ketu), and both these are inconjunct (150 degrees) Pluto. This forms a “fated” and potentially stressful aspect that may precipitate some turbulence in the coming month, possibly related to public health, finance, transportation or communication.

On an individual level, it is important to pay attention to our own situation and be aware of any tendencies to feel more compulsive or pressured than usual. Some may be feeling at a stalemate or overwhelmed by outside forces. Some may experience tension and aggression in communication with others, so be especially gentle and watch what you say and how you say it in this next month.

With a preponderance of planets in Taurus, Leo, and Aquarius, the Fixed Modality is extremely strong and out of balance now, which may reflect rigidity, idealism and extremism. This emphasis can give enormous determination and strength of will, but be cautious that this does not lend an uncompromising manner at the same time. Try to roll with the punches if you can, and don't punch anyone yourself!
