Juliana's News
I’m currently at home in Hawaii but will be back at home in the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts from May 4-June 5. I’m doing lots of readings, healing sessions and private tutoring these days. Beginning this week on April 22, I also will be teaching a three-week Level 2 class on “ Career and Life Purpose ” for the American College of Vedic Astrology Online Program:

In honor of Earth Day this week (April 22), I again am pleased to share the following by one of my favorite poets, Gary Snyder. This is after a Mohawk prayer (from Turtle Island):

PRAYER FOR THE GREAT FAMILY
Gratitude to Mother Earth, sailing through night and day--
and to her soil: rich, rare, and sweet
in our minds so be it.
Gratitude to Plants, the sun-facing light-changing leaf
and fine root-hairs; standing still through wind
and rain; their dance is in the flowing spiral grain
in our minds so be it.
Gratitude to Air, bearing the soaring Swift and the silent
Owl at dawn. Breath of our song
clear spirit breeze
in our minds so be it.
Gratitude to Wild Beings, our brothers, teaching secrets,
freedoms and ways; who share with us their milk;
self-complete, brave, and aware
in our minds so be it.
Gratitude to Water: clouds, lakes rivers, glaciers;
holding or releasing; streaming through all
our bodies salty seas
in our minds so be it.
Gratitude to the Sun: blinding pulsing light through
trunks of trees, through mists, warming caves where
bears and snakes sleep--he who wakes us--
in our minds so be it.
Gratitude to the Great Sky
who holds billions of stars--and goes yet beyond that--
beyond all powers, and thoughts
and yet is within us--
Grandfather Space.
The Mind is his Wife
so be it.

Astral Update: Happy New Beginnings!

“When there is a start to be made, don't step over! Start where you are.” -Edgar Cayce

This week we are moving toward a powerful New Moon in (sidereal) Aries on Friday, April 24, 2009 at 11:22:33 PM (EDT/Washington, DC). The waning Balsamic Moon that leads up to the New Moon will occur in Pisces on Wednesday and Thursday (April 22-23). The Balsamic Moon in Pisces would be a great time to clean out old “stuff” and let go of anything that is no longer serving your best and highest interest, to make way for the New Moon in Aries, which is always a superb time to initiate new projects and establish new patterns and practices that you feel inspired to follow.

The chart for this lunation (see below) has a Scorpio Ascendant in the nakshatra (lunar mansion) known as Jyestha, which is ruled by Indra. According to Dennis Harness (Dayananda) in his brilliant book titled The Nakshatras, Indra is “the King of the Gods and protector of heroes…the divine warrior and ‘dragon slayer’… [who] rides the mighty elephant, carries the thunderbolt and demonstrates the power of truth.” The third section of Jyestha, where this lunation Ascendant falls, is in the humanitarian sign of Aquarius, reflecting a theme of advocacy and protection for the underprivileged.

The Aries lunation falls in the sixth house of the United States New Moon chart, which places emphasis on debt, national employment, public health matters, disease, armed forces, and labor groups. As the Sun and Moon are rulers of the ninth and tenth houses of this chart, their conjunction forms a very auspicious combination of power and purpose known as dharma-karma adhipati yoga. This bodes well for aforementioned sixth house matters especially because these luminaries are in the divine healing sign of Ashwini, ruled by the Ashwin twins, radiant mystical beings who bring illuminating bliss and healing to everything they touch.

The Sun and Moon in Ashwini bring a focus on health and healing as well as the tendency to make quick improvements in all necessary areas of life. In terms of the mundane US chart, it is likely that unemployment will begin to show some decline in the coming months as President Obama’s administration continues to reel in the financial sectors, especially those related to consumer debt. We will probably soon witness radical new credit regulations, such as the lowering of consumer interest rates and tighter limits on consumer borrowing. Healthcare will also be in the news, and many new jobs will be coming out of the healthcare sector.

Retrograde Saturn in the tenth house is not so favorable in a mundane chart, especially as it is doubly malefic for a Scorpio chart as a natural malefic (difficult planet) and ruler of a malefic house (the third house of ego/desire). This placement reflects the government’s intense focus and determination to try and meet the many challenges we face; we will surely witness more bad economic news, war tragedies, international conflict and political upheaval. Nonetheless, Saturn crowning the chart also reminds us that each of us can help to overcome these collective challenges by cultivating enlightened understanding and unconditional compassion for the human condition.

Mars is a very important planet and mostly a positive influence in the lunation chart as well, since it rules (disposits) not only the Scorpio Ascendant but also the Sun and Moon in Aries. Mars is in Pisces conjoined exalted Venus, which signifies heightened passion in our relationships and a deeper connection with our spiritual power. It seems that this aspect between Mars and Venus may be a good one for the stock market. However, this is a tough call because Uranus, planet of shocks, accidents, turnarounds and surprises, is also conjunct Mars and Venus, so one might also expect volatility. The United States Kelleher chart has Pisces in the fourth house of real estate and agriculture, and the conjunction of these planets here may stimulate a positive trend in these realms of activity.

Many of us astrologers are thrilled that Jupiter will be entering sidereal Aquarius on May 1, where it will stay until late July. Jupiter, the planet of banks and banking, has been traveling in its debilitation sign of Capricorn since December 10, where it has been less than fortunate for the banking industry and where it reflects some of our collective pessimism. Jupiter will return to Capricorn on July 31 and will remain there until December 20, when it will enter sidereal Aquarius again. I believe that Jupiter is the esoteric ruler of Aquarius, where it gives very propitious results as a vehicle of divine love, truth and wisdom in service to humanity. This transit of Jupiter in Aquarius will be a much more uplifting and joyful time for all of us…so en-joy while it lasts!

Honoring Gaia: Earth Day
We can also look forward to an interesting astronomical event this week, with the upcoming occultation of Venus by the Moon on April 22, which just happens to be Earth Day. This conjunction brings with it a very sweet and gentle vibration, reflecting some lovely creative and spiritual energy. I feel this is a very beautiful omen on Earth Day, in honor of Gaia, the spirit of our living and breathing planet Earth. It’s like the two female goddess planets are giving Her a cosmic wink.

I wanted to share the following excerpt from my friend, colleague and eminent Vedic astrologer Christina Collins Hill, from the April ACVA Newsletter
vedicastrology.org/acva_news_april_09_tips_christina_collins.html

“Venus will temporarily seem to disappear as the Moon moves in front of it. This occurs two days before the New Moon, so it will be a crescent Moon that slips across Venus. You will be able to see this, especially on the West Coast of North America with either high quality binoculars or a telescope. It begins at around 5:00 am PDT, and you need to start watching in the beginning because the early sunrise may make the end of the about an hour event harder to see! I found a video for you:
